Waterloo Project continues..

We went back to work on the waterloo project during the second semester. Each one of us selected a site of interest and designed it. I chose Webber Row Estate. It has 4 residential buildings and a courtyard in between that has been neglected and fenced off the street.

I did some research and analysis on the whole Waterloo district:

Design Development Process:

My initial concept was the following:

- Open access through the courtyard

- Restore the play areas

- Add plants to the site

- Unify planting to make it look as one theme

- Unify and restore paving accross Webber Row Street

- Add 2 gateways to the site that are open during the day and closed at night for residents security

- Add lights to the path to make it look contineous and connected to the street

- Allow pedestrian access through the site to the other side connecting it with the other residential block (Peaboy Square)

- Improve parking areas by diminuing the space used

- Remove bike lockers

My final concept then became:

- Open a curvy access through the courtyard

- Restore play areas

- Add decking with built in benches

- Add a maze for children

- Add benches to the site

- A huge tree to be planted at the end of the site to block the view

- No parking areas

- Unify and restore paving across the street

- Add lighting to the site to connect it to the street

- remove all bike lockers

- unify planting

- Add ground cover (Grass) to the site.

- seperate residential buildings from courtyard but having shrubs in between.

This is the huge project for the year. We haven’t managed to finish it all. But we finished waterloo’s site analysis and research. The following images will show you all my work on this project. :)

1. Site Analysis Section B

“Water Nest” – Paddington Basin Part 2

Now we know where the original site is located. Paddington Basin! I went to visit the site with my class. I took some photographs, drew some sketches and took measurements.

After that, I had to develop my story further as my design develops.

First, I made three strategy models to explore issues of pedestrian and vehilcular passage. Also, to explore how space is defined on the site. I began to develop an attitude towards the site based upon my design concept and the developing story. I had to provide the lovers an intimate canal-side nest that inhabits the threshold between land and water.

Second, I drew an architectural site plan [CAD Plan] and section elevation of the site to understand it more. Then, I started drawing some sketches to develop my design and im still working on it :)

Finally, I am done with my design. In the slide below, you will be able to understand my design more and more. Enjoy :)

Points on my design development: 1.     My first concept was not to change much in the existing site. I just added a bench on the right side of the canal with some trees around. That was my nest. 2.     Then, I started thinking about the shape of the canal and decided to soften the edge by making it curvy instead of straight and add some grass around the canal side. 3.     Finally, I started thinking deeply about the site. I decided to change the land level a bit by raising the nest 1 meter above the canal and surrounding it with more water. I edited the shape of the curvy canal. I made it curvier so that it will adapt more to the site and the story of my two lovers. Now the love birds can enjoy the view from up high.

Water Nest Project Part 1

This project is quite interesting. It is the second project for this year. Still working on it!

The first part of the project was write a story about two coworkers who both come to work at new buildings built as part of a large canal-side regeneration scheme. Every day they pick up sandwiches at a nearby Spanish delicatessen, then share a bench along the canal for lunch. They were in love. So, I did some research on nests and pocket parks.

The second part was to design an urban garden room for a two lovers meeting on a 30m x 30m site. We didn’t know where the site was originally located.  We had to use our imagination. That was the exciting part of the project!

Finally, we had to build up a model using 2 materials only. It had to show the base of the site, No details!

Kingston Gateway Project

This is my first project in my second year in landscape architecture. Kingston University, Kingston College, and Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames are collaborating on a project to redefine the gateways into Kingston-upon-Thames. This project aims a construction of a new artwork/ structure by one of the students.

I chose Gateway number 4 which is The College Roundabout! I explored the concept of gateways by doing some research on gateways around the world. Then, I did some site analysis, in plan format to be able to understand alternative gateway locations within kingston.

Afterwards, I chose a proposal which was to enlarge the size of the roundabout and have more plants planted on it just to make it more noticable and beautiful. Then, I drew some drawings on how the gateway is experienced within the landscape.
